How to Use Baking Soda in Skincare: Dark Spots, Wrinkles & Dark Circles (What to Know)
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is often used in DIY skincare, but it is very alkaline and can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier if used too often. It may help remove surface buildup temporarily, but it does not erase wrinkles or permanently remove dark spots or dark circles.
1. For Gentle Skin Exfoliation (Occasional Use)
Ingredients:
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 1–2 teaspoons water
Method:
- Mix into a soft paste.
- Apply gently to damp skin.
- Leave for 30–60 seconds.
- Rinse well.
- Apply moisturizer.
Use: No more than once a week if your skin tolerates it.
2. For Dark Spots (Safer Approach)
Baking soda is not a proven dark-spot treatment. Better-supported options include:
- Sunscreen daily (most important)
- Vitamin C products
- Niacinamide
- Retinoids (when appropriate)
Dark spots often worsen without sun protection.
3. For Dark Circles
Baking soda will not remove dark circles. Common causes include:
- Genetics
- Lack of sleep
- Allergies
- Thin skin under the eyes
- Pigmentation
Try:
- Cold compress for a few minutes
- Good sleep routine
- Gentle moisturizer around the eyes
- Sun protection
4. For Wrinkles
Baking soda does not rebuild collagen or reverse wrinkles. Helpful habits include:
- Daily sunscreen
- Moisturizing
- Retinoid products (if suitable)
- Adequate sleep and hydration
Avoid baking soda on:
❌ Sensitive skin
❌ Broken or irritated skin
❌ Around the eyes
❌ Skin with eczema or frequent redness
Patch test first: Apply a small amount to a small area and wait 24 hours to check for irritation.
For healthier-looking skin, gentle products and consistent sun protection usually work better than harsh DIY treatments.
