Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 8–10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 2 sandwiches
Ingredients
- 4 slices of bread (white, sourdough, or whole wheat)
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (or 1 cup shredded cheddar)
- 2 tablespoons softened butter (or mayonnaise for a crispier crust)
Optional Add-Ins
- 2 slices tomato
- 2–4 slices cooked bacon
- Caramelized onions
- Fresh spinach
- Thinly sliced ham
- A pinch of garlic powder or black pepper
Instructions
1. Prepare the Bread
Spread a thin, even layer of butter on one side of each bread slice.
2. Assemble the Sandwich
- Place two slices of bread butter-side down.
- Add the cheese evenly over each slice.
- Add any optional fillings.
- Top with the remaining bread, butter-side up.
3. Cook
- Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
- Place the sandwiches in the pan.
- Cook for 3–5 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.
- Carefully flip and cook another 3–5 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
- If the bread browns too quickly, lower the heat so the cheese has time to melt.
4. Serve
Let the sandwiches rest for 1 minute, then slice in half and serve warm.
Tips for the Best Grilled Cheese
- Use medium-low heat for an evenly browned crust and perfectly melted cheese.
- Mix cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, Gruyère, or Monterey Jack for extra flavor.
- Cover the pan for 1–2 minutes while cooking to help the cheese melt faster.
- Pair with tomato soup, pickles, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
