Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 8–10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 2 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (white, sourdough, or whole wheat)
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (or 1 cup shredded cheddar)
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter (or mayonnaise for a crispier crust)

Optional Add-Ins

  • 2 slices tomato
  • 2–4 slices cooked bacon
  • Caramelized onions
  • Fresh spinach
  • Thinly sliced ham
  • A pinch of garlic powder or black pepper

Instructions

1. Prepare the Bread

Spread a thin, even layer of butter on one side of each bread slice.

2. Assemble the Sandwich

  • Place two slices of bread butter-side down.
  • Add the cheese evenly over each slice.
  • Add any optional fillings.
  • Top with the remaining bread, butter-side up.

3. Cook

  • Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
  • Place the sandwiches in the pan.
  • Cook for 3–5 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.
  • Carefully flip and cook another 3–5 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
  • If the bread browns too quickly, lower the heat so the cheese has time to melt.

4. Serve

Let the sandwiches rest for 1 minute, then slice in half and serve warm.

Tips for the Best Grilled Cheese

  • Use medium-low heat for an evenly browned crust and perfectly melted cheese.
  • Mix cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, Gruyère, or Monterey Jack for extra flavor.
  • Cover the pan for 1–2 minutes while cooking to help the cheese melt faster.
  • Pair with tomato soup, pickles, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
